Offer Description
A call is open for the allocation of 1 (one) research fellowship for undergraduate, MSc student or an undergraduate enrolled in a non-academic degree course (BI), within the Research Project entitled VespAlert - Sistema de detecção de espécies de vespas invasoras (PD25-00033), funded by the Promove Program “la Caixa” Foundation in partnership with the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), taking place at C-MAST/Department of Electromechanical Engineering, under the following conditions:

Objectives:
The objective of this grant is: (1) to develop the communication system for prototypes of the autonomous monitoring system for invasive wasp species (Asian hornet); (2) to support the programming of AI algorithms for image recognition; (3) to develop the web platform to aggregate, process and present the data; (4) developing studies on potential applicability; and (5) disseminating research results.
Work plan:
The work plan for the research grant was designed to support the project's research activities, namely:
i) Literature review, summary of relevant state-of-the-art information;
ii) Development of the communication system for prototypes of the autonomous monitoring system for invasive wasp species (Asian hornet);
iii) Support in programming AI algorithms for image recognition to count invasive wasp species (Asian hornet);
iv) Development of a web platform to aggregate, process and present data;
v) Development of studies on potential applicability;
vi) Dissemination of results.

Work location:
The work will be developed at C-MAST/Department of Electromechanical Engineering, University of Beira Interior, under the scientific supervision of Doctor Pedro Miguel de Figueiredo Dinis Oliveira Gaspar (dinis@ubi.pt).
Fellowship duration and conditions:
The fellowship is opened for twelve months, starting in April 2026. The activity is in regime of exclusive dedication in accordance with the RBIUBI.

- Hold an undergraduate's degree in Electromechanical Engineering or related fields and meet the requirements to be enrolled in a study programme leading to a MSc (or in a non-degree programme).
- Demonstrated experience in communication systems, monitoring systems, computer vision, and robotic systems.
- Demonstrated experience in scientific research, synthesis skills, problem solving and a collaborative attitude.
BIs awarded to undergraduate who attend courses that do not confer an academic degree can only be granted for a maximum period of one year.
BIs awarded to undergraduate who are enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree can only be awarded to those who do not exceed, with the conclusion of the fellowship contract in question, including any renewals, the accumulated period of two years in this type of fellowship, followed or interpolated.
If the required academic degree has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution, the requirements of Decree-Law 66/2018, of 16th August and Ministerial Order no. 33/2019, of 25th January, shall be obeyed. The proof of registration in the MSc/Non-degree course degree is required for the fellowship contractualization.
Additional Information
A monthly maintenance allowance will be granted in accordance with the Annex I of the RBIUBI, with the amount of 1040.98 € according to the updated values that can be consulted at https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can choose to be covered by the voluntary social insurance. These values will be added to the amount of monthly maintenance allowance.

The selection of candidates will be based on a merit evaluation, considering academic background, relevant experience, and overall suitability for the project. The final score will be calculated on a scale of 0 to 100, based on three weighted criteria: A) Academic Qualifications; B) Relevant Experience and Technical Skills, and C) Motivation and Interview Performance.
A) Under Academic Qualifications, emphasis will be placed on the relevance and final classification of the candidate’s academic degrees. An increase of up to 10 points may be applied as function of their scientific background in areas such as Electromechanical Engineering, and related fields.
B) Relevant Experience and Technical Skills will assess prior experience in the domain of communication systems, monitoring system technologies, computer vision and AI and robotic systems.
C) Motivation and Interview Performance will consider the quality and alignment of the motivation letter with the project’s objectives, as well as the candidate’s clarity, technical understanding, and communication skills demonstrated during the interview.
The top 3 candidates in items A and B will be admitted to the interview (C). The final score will be calculated using the formula: Final Score = (A, Academic Qualifications × 0.4) + (B, Relevant Experience × 0.4) + (C, Interview Performance × 0.2).
Candidates must obtain a minimum score of 50 to be considered eligible. In the case of a tie, preference will be given to the candidate with the highest score in Relevant Experience and Technical Skills (B).

Complaint and Appeal Procedures:
After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation and Interview), the candidates have 10 working days to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of article 121 and the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.
The proposal for the final ranking of the candidates will constitute a reserve list for selection for a period of 6 (six) months.
